Music of Morocco | موسيقى مغربي


Music is the center piece expression of Morocoo’s expression of its culture. It varies from Berber Folk pieces to Arab-Andalusian music.
Berber music is the music of first people of north western Africa. This music basically represent rural them. In villages people gather round in circle and play music with drums and flutes. It often features rhythmic clapping with drums. It also sometime used against the paranormal activities in the rural areas. Imdyazms travel around the Atlas mountain in summer tells poetic stories where they are backed by the drums, rabab and clarinets. Rwais is a form of Berber music, it mostly is played in Sous valley. It is performance that involves a single string rabab, one or two lotars, nakous and a number of singer. This music is used for celebrations.  


Gharnati is a form of Arab Andalusian music which basically from Algeria nut can be heard in some parts of Morocco like Rabad and Oujda. It uses ouds and kamenjahs alongside banjo mandolin and kwitra. Sufism is also a part Morocoo musical culture. It comes from the Islamic side. The sufi performers use a very private kind of music and dance as way to get close of Allah. It can be heard on “Moussem” and alms in households.
Chaabi is a kind of fusion music that is played in Morocco. A more sophisticatd version of chaabi came up in 1970’s as a reaction to the commercial music of Egypt and Lebanon. This version mostly compromised of bouzoukis, bankos, congas and electric guitar. Moroccan music has been idealized by many great artists like Brian Jones, Ornette Coleman and Dissidenten. Modern Moroccan music is a blend of reggae, funk, hip-hop and drum bass. Algerian Rai music has had an influence the new Gen music of Morocco. Rock music has laso recently enter into the Moroccan music but it is on underground level.
