Music of Turkey | türkiye müziği

Turkey is a country which is placed on the northeastern shore of Mediterranean sea and crossroad of different cultures from across the globe such as Europe, North Africa, Middle east, south and Central Asia.
Turkish people always liked classic music with turkic elements but with the passage of time and increased diversity Central Asia Folk music, Arabian Music, Greek music, Persian music, European and American popular music also influenced them partially.


Most known Turkish music types and genres played in turkey are:

l  Classical Turkish music
l  Polyphonic Turkish music
l  Turkish Folk music
l  Arabesque or Belly Dance music
I  Pop, rock and Jazz
l  Religious and Sufi music

Peak of Turkish classic music was in 1970’s with artist like Zeki Muren, Muzeyyen Senar and Orhan Gencebay. But the actual history of Turkish classic music goes all they way back to Ottoman Empire.
Classic music had always a certain amount of audience and it still have but with time taste of music changed.


Turkish music culture was entirely changed in the first quarter of  20 century because a new development took hold at that time as an new political sphere. Turks also experienced Western Culture and music at the period of time.


People are more towards Pop music now.
Turkish pop music is mostly heard everywhere, from artist like
Tarkan, Sezen Aksu and Mercan dede.
In 1960’s people started listening to Pop music in Turkey and now it has a big audience.

l  Sertab Erener
l  Kenan Dogulu
l  Sebnem ferah

All of these artist are Pop singers.
Tarkan is Elvis parsley of Turkey and has also been picked by Rhapsody to be the main artist in the European history of Pop music, his song “Simarik” is being a foundation on which the genre of Pop music is proceeding.

All around the globe turkey spread their traditional music and the unique style through their drama industry. Most of the drama’s / OST are dubbed into the languages of the viewers in different countries.
